Gregg Popovich has been in the coaching business for more than 50 years. Throughout his illustrious career, he has nurtured countless talents and there aren’t many who have one bad thing to say about him. Recently, one of his former pupils, Josh Richardson, revealed an interesting rule that Pops lives by, and it will make any player want to play for the Spurs HC.
Recently, on an episode of “The OGs Show”, Richardson revealed a story about the veteran coach. While out on a road trip, the Miami Heat guard went out for dinner with Gorgui Dieng & Keldon Johnson. When Dieng saw Popovich walk in & yelled “hell yeah!” The reason was quite simple, Popovich had a rule that whenever he saw one of his players having a meal during a road trip, he’d pay for it.
This is not something new-found, as Popovich made the Spurs culture to be one big family. The team will eat together during the season, go out together, win together and lose together. The 5-time NBA Championship-winning coach instilled the idea of a team mentality, which led to the Spurs’ successfully lifting 5 banners in San Antonio.
The idea of playing under Popovich is universally welcomed by a lot of NBA players and the fans have identified that as well. This is not a theory as there is undeniable proof of it.
