Tragic news coming out of Indiana today, as former Purdue Boilermaker and first round pick of the Portland Trailblazers Caleb Swanigan passed away on Monday evening.
Allen County Coroner’s Office in Indiana has confirmed that Swanigan died of natural causes at the age of 25.
Born in the basketball crazed state of Indiana, Caleb was a star since his high school days. He led Homestead High School to its first ever state title and was named Indiana’s “Mr. Basketball”. He would then join Purdue for two years where he would break the school single season record for rebounds as well as the record for most double-doubles in a season.
After his sophomore season, Swanigan declared himself eligible for the 2017 NBA Draft and was selected with the 26th overall pick by Portland. After two seasons with the Blazers, he was traded to Sacramento for two seasons, only to return to Portland for his final season in 2019-20.
He played twenty games in his final season before opting out of playing in the NBA Bubble for personal reasons.
