After 16 years in the NBA, Derrick Rose announced his retirement. Most fans will remember him from his time with the Chicago Bulls when he won an MVP award for the team for the first time since Michael Jordan and was a perennial All-Star for eight years.
Lou Williams recently discussed Derrick Rose on the ‘Run It Back’ program. He thinks Derrick Rose should be inducted into the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame based only on his influence. Comparing Derrick Rose to Allen Iverson and Stephen Curry in terms of his impact on the position and the game of basketball, he considers him to be among the most significant point guards of all time.
Williams stated, “Nobody had the impact at the point guard position since Derrick Rose. AI [Allen Iverson] before that. AI, Derrick Rose, and Steph Curry. Statues are personal to Chicago, he definitely deserves a statue.”
Rose’s career was drastically changed by a sad injury in 2012. After that, he had difficulty returning to his previous fitness and form. Rose spent much of his NBA career as a supporting player. However, he did hop around to other clubs, including the Knicks, Cavaliers, Timberwolves, Pistons, and Grizzlies.
It is unfair to compare Williams to Iverson and Curry, even while he is attempting to give to Rose. The only similarity between them is that all three players were formerly NBA MVPs. Iverson and Curry were NBA superstars for nearly their careers, and their primes lasted far longer.
Jeff Teague Reflects On His First Impression Of Derrick Rose
The careers of Jeff Teague and Rose unexpectedly intersected before they were NBA players and then teammates. As a young adolescent, the Indiana native first learned about the 2011 MVP. This was only the start of Derrick’s rise. At Simeon Career Academy, the Chicago native was already causing a stir because of his unparalleled speed and ability to control games.

Teague said, “I’ve seen him in eighth grade. Going to eighth grade, he played for a team called Ferrari, and it was a team called Houston Hoops; we were in a gas station. And they’re like, ‘You’re good… but have you ever seen Derrick Rose? I’m like, ‘Who that?’ And your name sound fake. Like Derrick Rose, you don’t hear nobody last name Rose; instead, Jaylen Rose.”
The Chicago Bulls, Rose’s hometown team, selected him first overall in the 2008 NBA Draft. Derrick Rose was not the explosive MVP he once was when he joined the Timberwolves, but he was still determined to help.
Teague and his teammates couldn’t help but respect the perseverance that drove his recovery. One of the NBA’s greatest “what-if” careers ended in 2024 when Rose finally announced retirement after bouncing around a few more organizations.
