This season, NBA viewership experienced a significant decline, and a former NBA player, Shaquille O’Neal, suggested that the increase in three-point shooting is to blame. In this context, DeMarcus Cousins proposed an unexpected solution to help boost NBA viewership.
During a recent appearance on Run It Back on FanDuel TV, Cousins suggested that incorporating two-minute fight sessions between coaches and players could enhance NBA ratings.
“If I was running things, obviously, I wouldn’t mind a little two-minute fight session, something like hockey. That gives guys a few moments to get it off their chest and get back to the game. I think it’s entertaining. I think it’s great for sports, only the strong survive. That’s part of it for me. I think it would be entertaining. I definitely think it would boost the ratings.” Cousins said.
Boston Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla shares a similar viewpoint to Cousins, who recently played for the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. In an interview with NBC Sports a few weeks ago, Mazzulla suggested that the NBA should consider allowing power plays and fighting, similar to the NHL.

Cousins played 11 seasons in the NBA before joining Puerto Rico’s Baloncesto Superior National League in April 2023. He later signed a contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in Taiwan’s T1 League. While many NBA fans were curious about Cousins’ potential return to the NBA, the four-time NBA All-Star provided insights into his feelings about making a comeback.
“I’m not going to go out trying to convince these guys anymore. You know what I bring to the floor. It’s been proven. If you really wanted to know who I am, you’d take the time to get to know me instead of listening to somebody else. I’m past trying to reach out. If an opportunity comes that makes sense, I’ll consider it, but I’m done with the convincing.” Cousins said during an interview on the Club 520 Podcast on September 9, 2024.
