The basketball community is in shock following the sudden passing of Amir Abdur-Rahim, head coach of the University of South Florida men’s basketball team. He died on October 24 at the age of 43.
Abdur-Rahim reportedly passed away due to complications during a medical procedure at a Tampa-area hospital. In response to the tragic loss, USF’s athletic director, Michael Kelly, expressed his grief and admiration for the coach.
“All of us with South Florida Athletics are grieving with the loved ones of Coach Abdur-Rahim. He was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation. Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the university, and the community,” Kelly said.
Abdur-Rahim joined the Bulls ahead of last season. In his first year, he led the team to a record-breaking 25 victories, the most wins in the history of USF’s basketball program. The loss came just days before Abdur-Rahim was set to begin his second season at South Florida.

Amir Abdur-Rahim’s older brother, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who played 13 seasons in the NBA, expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of condolences and support. Shareef thanked everyone who reached out to the family during this difficult time.
“On behalf of my family, I want to express our gratitude to all who have reached out regarding Amir’s passing. Please remember our family in your prayers. As @sunsetAMIR would say, To God be the glory,” Shareef said.

Amir Abdur-Rahim’s passing has not only left a void in the University of South Florida’s basketball program but also in the hearts of his family. He leaves behind his wife, Arianne, and three children, daughters Laila and Lana and son Aydin.
