The Dallas Mavericks suffered a disappointing loss to the Boston Celtics, falling 107-89 in Game 1. With Game 2 approaching, the Mavericks are facing a must-win situation to even the series. Former NBA player Sam Mitchell weighed in on what the Mavericks need to do to secure a victory in the upcoming game.
According to Mitchell, the key for the Mavericks lies in the performance of their star players, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. He suggested that Doncic needs to score and facilitate the offense by recording double-digit assists, thereby getting his teammates more involved in the game.
“Luka and Kyrie play a whole lot better. Luka had 30 points, but they gotta be more efficient. Luka’s gonna have to have double-digit assists that means getting others involved,” he said.
Doncic had nothing to prove in Game 1. In his debut final game, he recorded 30 points, 10 rebounds, one assist, and two steals, per NBA.com. Despite Doncic’s individual solid performance in Game 1, the synergy between the WCF MVP and Irving seemed lacking. The Mavericks’ offensive struggles in Game 1 were also evident, as they scored only 89 points. It is their lowest point total of the postseason.
Will history repeat itself for the Dallas Mavericks?
Despite trailing 1-0 in the NBA Finals after Game 1 against the Boston Celtics, the Dallas Mavericks’ fans remain hopeful, drawing inspiration from the team’s historic championship win in 2011.
The Mavericks’ last NBA championship victory came in the 2011 NBA Finals. In that memorable series, the Mavericks faced a similar setback, losing Game 1 to the Miami Heat. However, they went on to defy the odds and secure the championship in six games.
