Former NBA star Ben Gordon was arrested for what police described as a “bizarre” incident at a juice shop in Stamford, Connecticut on Tuesday morning.
Per Jennifer Millman of NBC New York, police stated that Gordon “allegedly displayed a knife” and acted aggressively toward shop employees. They then called police, who then took the ex-Chicago Bulls’ star into custody.
The report also stated that when police apprehended Gordon, they found a knife, a stun gun and brass knuckles inside a backpack. His “aggressive behavior” prompted police to take Gordon to a local hospital to undergo a mental health check:
“The former UConn standout, who was drafted third overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 2004 NBA draft, was later released from the hospital and taken back to police headquarters, where he eventually complied with booking procedures, officials say. He was released on a $10,000 bond posted by his family.
Gordon faces weapons and threat-related charges, as well as one count each of disorderly conduct, interfering with policy and sixth-degree larceny for allegedly refusing to pay for a glass of juice.
His attorney didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment Thursday. Gordon is due back in court later this month.”
Gordon was drafted third overall by the Bulls in 2004, behind Dwight Howard (first overall to the Orlando Magic) and Emeka Okafor (second to the Charlotte Bobcats). Gordon had one of the best rookie seasons in Bulls history, averaging 15.1 points and two assists per game en route to Sixth Man of the Year and NBA All-Rookie First Team honors.
Gordon, who led the UConn Huskies to a 2004 national championship over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, played for four NBA teams in his career. After five seasons with the Bulls, he joined the Detroit Pistons for three years.

He played the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons with Charlotte before joining the Magic for his swan song NBA season in 2014-15. For his career, the 40-year-old Gordon averaged 14.9 points, 2.5 assists and as many assists per game.
Gordon helped the Bulls to playoff appearances in the four of his five seasons with the organization. They got as far as the conference semifinals in 2007, losing to the Pistons in six games.
