Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns joining the New York Knicks a few days ago is the most shocking NBA trade ahead of the 2024-25 season. The Knicks traded Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo for Towns to fill their center position following Mitchell Robinson’s delay in recovery. Recently, 2008 NBA champion Kendrick Perkins made a huge claim on the four-time All-Star’s move.
Karl-Anthony Towns played a key role in the Minnesota Timberwolves victory against defending champions Denver Nuggets in the Conference semi-finals. On ESPN’s NBA Today, Perkins claimed the former Timberwolves big man “outplayed” the three-time NBA MVP, Nikola Jokic, on offense and defense.
“Hell yeah, he is. Wasn’t Kristaps Porzingis the piece for the Boston Celtics to get them over the top?” Perkins said. “I don’t think we realize how great of a player or talent Karl-Anthony Towns is. Let’s remember, the second round of the playoffs against the Denver Nuggets, he outplayed Jokic on both ends of the floor. Now he was cooking him. He was having his moments all throughout the postseason, especially in that second round – defensively as well.”
Karl-Anthony Towns’ Role To Make The Knicks Title Contenders
Last season, Towns and his superstar teammate Anthony Edwards powered Minnesota to 56 wins, their most since the 2003-04 season. The Timberwolves suffered a 4-1 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the Conference Finals last season. The 2016 Rookie of the Year joining Jalen Brunson’s Knicks brought a shift in the competitive landscape of the league.
Jalen Brunson led the Knicks to the second-place finish in the Eastern Conference standings last season. Following the injuries to the star players, including Julius Randle, New York suffered a second-round loss in the 2024 NBA Playoffs. After Isaiah Hartenstein’s exit and Mitchell Robinson set to miss the start of the season, the Knicks badly needed a center.

With Towns’ arrival, the Knicks only follow the Boston Celtics and the Oklahoma City Thunder as the team with the best odds to win the NBA 2024-25 championship. Tom Thibodeau’s side will face the defending champion in the upcoming season’s opening game on October 22.
