Galen Young, a former college basketball star for the Charlotte 49ers, has died following a horrific accident.
The 45-year-old has passed away in what is being called a freak accident.
“The 49ers Basketball family mourns the loss of former standout Galen Young. Young played for the 49ers from 1997-99 and was 1999 C-USA Tournament MVP. Our thoughts and prayers are with Galen’s family at this difficult time. Rest In Peace, Galen,” the program tweeted.
Charlotte Observer dropped more details:
“The circumstances of Young’s death are unusual. According to a tweet Saturday night from the Memphis police department, a vehicle crashed into a house in Memphis on Horn Lake Road. The crash killed Young, who was inside the house at the time. The driver of the vehicle, who was not named, was issued a citation by the officers who responded at 2:42 a.m Saturday. The investigation is ongoing.
Marlon Thomas, Young’s former teammate with the Charlotte 49ers and his friend for more than 30 years, said Saturday afternoon in an interview that Young had been visiting his mother, Gladys, in his Memphis hometown. It was her house that the vehicle crashed into, although Thomas said Gladys Young was unhurt.”
Young averaged 14.7 points and 7.2 rebounds in his final season at Charlotte and then became a second round NBA Draft pick by the San Antonio Spurs. However, he never played in the league, but played several years overseas.
