Less than a week after a video surfaced of Meyers Leonard using an anti-Semitic slur, the NBA announced their punishment for the Miami Heat player.
According to a press release, the league fined Leonard $50,000 and suspended him from all team activities for one week. On top of that, he will be required to participate in a cultural diversity program.
League commissioner Adam Silver released a statement:
“Meyers Leonard’s comment was inexcusable and hurtful and such an offensive term has no place in the NBA or in our society,” Silver wrote. “Yesterday, he spoke to the representatives of the Anti-Defamation League to better understand the impact of his words and we accept that he is genuinely remorseful. We have further communicated to Meyers that derogatory comments like this will not be tolerated and that he will be expected too uphold the core values of our league – equality, tolerance, inclusion and respect – at all times moving forward.”

Social media was not happy about any of these announcements:
The 11th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, Leonard is averaging 3.3 points per game in 2020-21.
He was limited to just three games played this year due to having season-ending shoulder surgery.
