Lauri Markkanen, also known as the Finnisher, was traded to the Utah Jazz in September 2022. Markkanen, who was rumored to be traded to the Golden State Warriors, had two impressive seasons with the team, but his future with the Jazz is uncertain.
According to recent reports by Tim Kawakami of the Athletic, Markkanen is not expected to sign a new deal with the Jazz by Tuesday. Kawakami mentioned in his reports that Markkanen will have more control over his future if he chooses not to sign the contract this week, as he will either receive a significant salary this summer or in the future.
“The 27-year-old Markkanen knows he’s going to get major money either now or next summer. By not signing this week, Markkanen essentially gains a bit of control over his future.” Kawakami of the Athletic wrote in his latest reports.
Earlier on Monday, ESPN NBA Insiders Bobby Marks and Tim MacMahon reported that the Golden State Warriors were close to signing Markkanen in a potential trade with the Jazz. However, it appears that the deal did not meet the requirements and is unlikely to go through.
The news surprised NBA fans, who expressed their opinions in the comment section of the post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

NBA Insider Reveals Exciting Updates on the Warriors-Jazz Trade Talks for Markkanen
NBA Insider Marc Stein also gave some insight on Sunday’s potential deal between the Warriors and Jazz for Markkanen. He explained that this deal isn’t being finalized because of Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski.
The Warriors, as of Sunday, continued to be regarded as the league’s most ardent Markkanen suitor…but at the same time still unwilling to surrender Brandin Podziemski in a trade package for the 7-foot Finn. Golden State, to date, has pursued Markkanen without including Podziemski or Jonathan Kuminga in trade packages laden with future draft compensation.
Markkanen missed several games in the 2023-24 season due to a shoulder injury and the team’s deliberate strategy to focus on player development. Despite these challenges, the 27-year-old forward still managed to average 23.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in the recent season.
