Bronny James’ journey into the NBA spotlight has mirrored the intense scrutiny that followed his NBA draft. Much like his draft selection, his performance during the Summer League sparked a wave of criticism. His regular-season debut against the Minnesota Timberwolves also couldn’t silence the naysayers, as he finished the game with just two points.
Despite the early struggles, Bronny has found an unexpected defender in former NBA player Iman Shumpert. The former LeBron James teammate sees similarities between Bronny and Lonzo Ball. Interestingly, like Bronny, Ball began his career with the Chicago Bulls, spending two seasons there before moving to the New Orleans Pelicans.
During an exclusive interview with RG.org, Shumpert initially expressed frustration at how Lonzo Ball hasn’t received enough recognition for his contributions to the game. He then sparked debate by drawing comparisons between Ball’s and Bronny’s play styles.
“People don’t give Lonzo Ball enough credit. Even though he’s had his ups and downs, he plays a team game. He’s able to get other players involved. He’s able to make people better, and I think Bronny does an excellent job of that,” Shumpert said.
“He does an excellent job of staying in a rhythm without getting people out of rhythm. He doesn’t take a lot of dribbles. They need a lot of touches to get going. And he doesn’t,” he added.
Iman Shumpert Stirs Controversy with Bronny James and Lonzo Ball Comparison
Lonzo Ball, the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, entered the NBA with high expectations. From the start, he impressed fans with his athleticism and potential. Ball’s rookie season showed flashes of brilliance, and he quickly established himself as a promising young player.

However, injuries have plagued his career, hindering his ability to play at his highest level consistently. Despite these setbacks, Ball has demonstrated more athletic prowess than many of his peers, including the young Bronny James.
Hence, Shumpert’s comparison came as a surprise to many NBA fans. They couldn’t help but express their astonishment.
For many fans, Shumpert’s remarks were seen as a slight to Ball, who is coming off a season where he averaged 13 points and 5.1 assists per game.
In their view, Ball’s experience and athleticism set him apart from Bronny, who has yet to establish himself at the professional level fully. While it’s clear that Bronny has talent, comparisons to established players like Lonzo Ball may be too early in his career.
