The Los Angeles Lakers kicked off their regular season on a high note, winning their first three games after a rocky preseason that saw them finish 2-4. However, that momentum came to a halt on Monday night when the Phoenix Suns handed LeBron James’ team their first loss of the season, edging out the Lakers 109-105.
Despite leading by various points in the fourth quarter, the Lakers couldn’t secure the victory. During the game, Lakers coach JJ Redick designed a crucial play to get Austin Reaves an open three-pointer. Nevertheless, the shot didn’t connect. After the Suns fouled, the Lakers had another chance, but LeBron James made a controversial decision during the final moments.
With just 6.1 seconds left in the game, James stepped to the free-throw line. He made the first shot but intentionally missed the second, hoping to grab an offensive rebound and create a new scoring opportunity. This decision raised eyebrows, as it meant the Lakers missed out on a chance to tie the game with a potential three-pointer.
Fans were quick to express their disappointment over his choice, questioning why he didn’t simply make the second free throw, which could have allowed the Lakers to foul and regain possession for a final shot.

JJ Redick Defends LeBron’s Controversial Miss Against The Suns
LeBron James’ decision to intentionally miss a free throw in the closing seconds drew a mix of frustration and confusion from fans. JJ Redick addressed the situation in the post-game press conference, clarifying that the team was aware of James’ strategy.
“We communicated that, yeah. Everybody that was on the floor knew what was happening… It was an insane miss. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an intentional miss hit the bottom of the rim and go straight down,” Redick said.
LeBron, the ambassador of Nike, finished the night with only 11 points on 3-of-14 shooting. He also contributed eight assists and five rebounds.
