Bronny James has been the main attraction of the Lakers in the Summer League. The young guard stepped on the hardwood in Purple and Gold for the early games but couldn’t have the impact that is expected from him. To take the load off him, the new head coach JJ Redick highlighted the positive notes from the tournament, that is his defense, and asked Bronny to focus on that.
Defending Bronny while talking to the ESPN panel, Redick said, “[Lou Dort’s] impact – you can’t get into your offense sometimes. The shot clock winds down because of his ball pressure…Bronny eventually will be that guy”
The HC compared Bronny with the Thunder player Luguentz Dort, who excels defensively but doesn’t impress with his offense. Speaking about what he would like to see the 19-year-old do, Redick said, “I’d like to see is a lot of ball pressure.”
The former Duke brought up the recent exhibition game between the USA and Canada teams, in which Dort had a brilliant defensive impact. Redick felt Bronny had similar qualities and could become a key player on the team.
Though Bronny’s numbers are disappointing, Redick has high expectations of the point guard. Despite lacking ability on offense, Bronny showed great defensive skills in the league.

Bronny managed to add 4 points against the Kings in his first game and 3 in the second against the Heat. In the third game against the Rockets, Junior James recorded his highest score of 8 points. Bronny grabbed 5 rebounds and recorded 2 steals in the last game. One common thing that was noticeable in all three games was his struggle to shoot, especially from behind the 3-point line.
However, the Lakers couldn’t secure a win in the games and continue to suffer losses. To prove his doubters wrong, Bronny must buckle up and display his true potential.
