NBA Hall of Famer Jerry West, who spent 14 years playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, passed away on Wednesday at 86. The NBA community was deeply saddened by the news. Numerous NBA players paid tribute to West.
Recently, during an episode of the Pat McAfee show, Mike Greenberg, an anchor and TV show host, paid tribute to West and explained the significance of West’s impact on the NBA. He claimed that West had the most successful and Impactful career in the NBA’s history.
“I think you could make a very strong argument that Jerry West had the most consistently successful and impactful career in the history of American professional sports,” Greenberg said.
In his latest post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Greenberg also reflects on Jerry West’s legendary career.
“Jerry West will forever be among the most accomplished people in the history of American sports. He was relevant and dominant in every decade since the 1950s, a player well ahead of his time, a visionary executive, and a role model for every generation that has followed the path he created. RIP to the logo; no one who loves sports will ever forget you.” Greenberg wrote.

Jerry West had an incredibly successful NBA career as a guard. He was named the All-Star MVP in 1972 and won the NBA Championship in the same year. The Lakers legend was selected to the NBA All-Star Team 14 times.

Additionally, West holds the NBA record for the highest points per game average in a playoff series. Notably, during the 1969 season, he is the only player in NBA history to be selected as Finals MVP while playing on the losing side.
In addition to Greenberg’s statement, Michael Jordan, widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, also paid tribute to Lakers legend West. Jordan sent a message to Stephen A. Smith, who later explained it.
“I am so deeply saddened at the news of Jerry’s passing. He was truly a friend and a mentor. Like an older brother to me. I valued his friendship and knowledge. I always wished I could’ve played against him as a competitor. But the more I came to know him, I wish I had been his teammate.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also issued a statement on West’s passing, describing him as a basketball genius and a defining figure in the league for over 60 years.
