13-time NBA All-Star Dwyane Wade spent most of his NBA career with the Miami Heat and earned three championships with it. Recently, outside the Kaseya Center, the Heat unveiled a statue in Wade’s honor. He also became one of only six Heat players to have his jersey retired by the team.
But as Wade recently revealed, there was a time he nearly walked away from Miami. During an interview on The OGs Show, hosted by former teammate Udonis Haslem, Dwayne Wade shared the story of how he almost left the Heat until a call from LeBron James changed everything.
“I wanted to be a part of a time that could win. And I didn’t think that nobody out there that we could get was going to get us to that level. Not that they weren’t good players; I just didn’t think it was enough,” Wade said.
“I was actually leaving Miami at that time. I didn’t think that nobody out there that we could get was going to help us get to that level. But then, everything changed. I got that call, man. I got that call from #6,” Wade added.
Dwyane Wade’s Son Discusses His Goals Beyond Just Following His Dad’s NBA Success
While many sons of NBA legends dream of following in their fathers’ footsteps, Wade’s son, Zaire, is taking a unique approach to his own journey. Zaire recently joined his father on the podcast “The Why with Dwyane Wade,” where he shared his perspective on carving his own path in life.
“Obviously, you want to be like Pops growing up. I still do it as far as just being a successful man and father. But basketball-wise, I was telling [Dwyane Wade] the other day that even some of the moves he did it’s just impossible to replicate me messing around in the gym with no defenders. So just trying to embrace who I am,” Zaire said.

Wade had a remarkable NBA career, which isn’t easy to replicate. Hence, Zaire looks up to his dad’s success off the court, but when it comes to basketball, he’s determined to embrace his individuality.
