LeBron James has a squeaky-clean reputation and can be considered one of the most responsible athletes in the history of sports. However, his good friend and former teammate Dwyane Wade recently shared a story detailing the manner in which the four-time NBA champion nearly ended his NBA career 12 years ago.
LeBron, Wade, and Chris Bosh had teamed up in Miami to form the legendary Heat Big 3, known as the Heatles during the four years Bron spent in South Beach. Their first season ended in failure, though Giannis Antetokounmpo might disagree, with Miami losing to the Dallas Mavericks in the 2011 NBA finals.
It appears King James was in a dark place after getting as close to what would have been his first ring. While Wade had already won a championship in his third year, James was still searching for his first, having entered the NBA in the same draft class.
Speaking to Rachel Nichols on her new Headliners show, Wade revealed how James put everything at risk by jumping into a swimming pool from an overhanging balcony after their heartbreaking finals loss.
“We out there just looking at the pool, chilling, and Bron and [Savannah] came up,” Wade recalled. “No lie… LeBron came in and said, ‘What’s up?’ Looked down, and there was the pool down there.
“Looked down, he said, ‘How deep do you think that is?’ Around eight or nine feet. He said, ‘Let me see.’ Took his stuff off and jumped in the pool from the balcony, I promise you. I was like, ‘This dude is crazy.’ He didn’t need to think about that [the end of his career]. He just jumped in the water. I’m serious.”
Fortunately for everyone involved LeBron did not hurt himself and would go on to win two consecutive championships with Wade and the Heat before winning one each with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers.

This isn’t the first such story Wade has shared about his wild adventures with LBJ. Back in 2020, he revealed how the 38-year-old saved Carmelo Anthony from drowning during another one of their offseason trips.
