Former Laker Dwight Howard is among the NBA stars who have earned a lot from the league. The NBA is known for the massive amount of money it offers to the players. LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Jayson Tatum are among the superstars who have a max contract along with extensions.
However, with this amount of money comes great problems. Dwight Howard, on his podcast “Above The Rim,” discussed issues that players face after earning an immense amount of money. Howards’s guest Joe Smith explains that the phrase ‘More Money, More Problems’ is actually true.
Smith said, “First of all, you gotta adjust your lifestyle. Me, I was just a sophomore in college, 19 years old when I got drafted. Really not familiar with having 10 bucks in my pocket in college. To go from that to being drafted overnight, you’re able to do a lot more. Just being able to transfer from financial-wise, being able to understand and try and learn as much as I can about finances at that age was something that was new.”
He added, “Because all we did was focus on basketball… When you get drafted, that’s probably one of the first things you need to try and focus on. I was 10 years before you, so I had guys like Charles Barkley and Karl Malone, Hakeem Olajuwon, all of those veteran guys… I had to get used to playing up against them…” (starts at 2:43)
Smith raises important points regarding young players joining the league. It may be quite the distraction and temptation for a young player straight out of college to enter the NBA and suddenly be making millions of dollars, as college players were not allowed to earn money until very recently.
