Prime Dwight Howard was somehow unappreciated and one of the most underrated players in NBA history. We know that because he was left off the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team.
With eight All-Star selections, eight All-NBA team selections, five All-Defensive selections, and three Defensive Player of the Year awards, Howard is undoubtedly one of the greats.
The former NBA star was asked recently if he would take the prime version of himself over the prime version of Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic, and he made it clear he was taking himself.
“Prime Dwight Howard all day, every day!” Howard exclaimed. “I’m dominating every play with a smile on my face.”
Howard was extremely dominating with the Magic from 2004 to 2012. Howard was chosen an All-Star six times during his eight seasons in Orlando, and he was awarded Defensive Player of the Year three times between 2009 and 2011. While Jokic won two MVP honors, the team’s performance has been fairly equitable.

Jokic just made his first NBA Finals appearance, matching Howard’s feat from 2009. If Jokic and the Nuggets win a championship, he will undoubtedly go ahead of Howard in terms of their primes. Howard won a championship with the Lakers in 2020, but was well beyond his prime at that point.
We also have to mention that Jokic already has two MVP awards and he is well above Howard when it comes to being a scorer and passer. Howard’s defense athletic ability and defense certainly holds weight.
