Following Klay Thompson’s exit, the Golden State Warriors have only two superstars, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, who were part of the franchise’s last four NBA championship victories. While the Dubs primarily rely on Curry and Green this season, they will feature a young roster, including Jonathan Kuminga. Ahead of the 2024-25 season, the four-time NBA All-Star discussed the suitable position for the 21-year-old forward.
After 13 years, the Warriors will play without Klay Thompson, who joined the Dallas Mavericks in the summer. Steve Kerr’s side finished 10th in the Western Conference standings last season and failed to reach the playoffs following a play-in loss against the Sacramento Kings.
During the media day, Green was asked about the possibility of Kuminga being a power forward in the upcoming season. Green denied the possibility, as he believed the 21-year-old was skilled enough to play the small forward position. Green said, “I think he’s [Kuminga] a three. That’s always been my opinion. To play the four, it requires a certain skill set.”
He added, “So oftentimes, people approach the four as if it’s not a position… You don’t think anybody can play the point guard; the four is the same way. A certain knowledge and a certain understanding of that position to do that.”
How Does The Warriors Roster Look Ahead Of The 2024-25 NBA Season?
Last season, Kuminga averaged 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists with 52.9% shooting from the field. Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. expressed his desire to increase Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody’s roles ahead of the upcoming season. While asked about not overpaying star players like Paul George and Lauri Markkanen in the free agency, he said, “There’s no point in going all in to be slightly above average.”
