Despite the Sacramento Kings’ loss to the Boston Celtics on Friday, Domatas Sabonis cemented his place in basketball history. Sabonis currently has the record for most double-doubles in a season.
Domantas Sabonis finished Friday with sixteen points and 16 rebounds for the Kings. The game marked his 73th double-double of the 2023-24 season. The record is the most double-doubles in a single campaign since 1992-93 when Hakeem Olajuwon had 72. It is also his 60th straight double-double.
The game seemed to be over. The Boston Celtics led by 18 points halfway through the final quarter and rested their key players after clinching the NBA’s best record in their last game on Wednesday. The Kings took advantage, rallying to grab a one-point lead with 27 seconds remaining on a 3-pointer by De’Aaron Fox, who finished with 40 points on the night.
After a Boston basket, the Kings had three opportunities after calling a timeout with 7.1 seconds left, but they fell short, falling 101-100 on Friday night at TD Garden in Boston. Despite the defeat, the Kings secured a Western Conference play-in position because the Houston Rockets lost to the Miami Heat.

Domantas Sabonis became the fifth player in NBA history to have a 60-game or longer run. He matched Elvin Hayes for the seventh-longest run in NBA history. It was his 73rd double-double of the season, the most since Moses Malone’s 72 in 1982-1983.
The Kings ended up shooting 44-33 from the field, a result that was their fifth-worst percentage of the year. Sacramento was still hampered by Malik Monk and Kevin Huerter’s absences. The loss brought the Kings’ current losing run against the Celtics to a total of six.
