The Dallas Mavericks are making bold moves to revamp their roster as they recently traded Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis and Max Christie. In the offseason, they also secured sharpshooter Klay Thompson from the Golden State Warriors. Now, the Mavericks are reportedly eyeing an even bigger splash by attempting to acquire Kevin Durant.
The team’s current roster includes stars like Kyrie Irving, Davis, and Thompson, with solid supporting pieces such as PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford. Financially, the Mavericks are $628K below the luxury tax and $6.3M under the first apron, which gives them some room to maneuver.

The Suns, however, will demand a significant return for Durant. With their draft assets, including first-round picks in 2025, 2026, 2028, and 2031, Dallas has the capital to sweeten any deal. They can also trade up to three first-round picks and have an unprotected 2029 pick from the Lakers to offer.
Shaquille O’Neal Weighs In On Rumored Kevin Durant Trade To The Mavericks
As rumors of the Mavericks’ interest in acquiring the Suns superstar circulate, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal offered his thoughts on the potential blockbuster move during the NBA on TNT pregame show. In Shaq’s eyes, Dallas has cap space for Durant as they’ve successfully escaped from giving Luka a $345 million supermax deal.
“I have seen reports that the Suns are taking conversations about Kevin Durant. With the move that they don’t have to pay (Luka Doncic) a supermax, I’m sure they’ve got a lot of money floating around. So if they’re putting it out there, it can happen,” Shaq said.
Dallas has clearly shown its willingness to take risks in pursuit of championship glory. Yet, the team would need to craft a compelling package, likely including draft assets and key players, to convince Phoenix to part ways with their perennial All-Star. Only time will tell if Durant becomes the next piece in their puzzle.
