Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker was recently involved in an altercation with Houston Rockets player Cam Whitmore. Booker spoke about the incident after the game and decided to keep things professional.
This was one of many altercations that the NBA has seen in the past few weeks. Jimmy Butler and four other players were also suspended recently after an altercation. Although the NBA hasn’t announced a punishment for Booker and Whitmore, we can speculate on the consequences of their actions.
Devin Booker claims ‘Nothing personal’ Cam Whitmore altercation
Suns star Devin Booker has spoken about his altercation with Rockets star Cam Whitmore. The video of the altercation is making the rounds on the internet and the fans are reacting to it. In the video, Cam Whitmore could be seen initiating aggressive contact with Booker. He comes forward and lunges toward the Sun’s guard pushing him. Booker pulls Whitmore’s shirt in response and throws him away.
Royce O’Neal can be seen coming between the two stars to calm them down. Booker has stated the altercation and kept it professional. “I think it is always fun to turn it up a little bit. Getting ultra-competitive. That is what this sport is about; I feel like we are getting away from it, as a whole the NBA…Nothing personal, it is just competition,” said Booker. He kept things professional and described the incident as a part of the game rather than taking it personally.
What punishment will NBA give Devin Booker, Cam Whitmore?
This altercation between Devin Booker and Cam Whitmore might have some consequences for both stars. The NBA management has not yet released any official statement about the issue but we can speculate on the right punishment by looking at recent examples and referring to the rulebook. Most recently, Jose Alvarado and Thomas Bryant got into an altercation and saw themselves getting suspended for it. The same happened with Jimmy Butler and Naji Marshall.
Usually, flagrant fouls or personal fouls are issued when unnecessary contact or altercations happen on the court. This can lead to ejections after a player has gathered enough of them. According to Rule e, section VI-Fighting Fouls, Rule No. 12 of the NBA rule book, “A fine not exceeding $50,000 and/or suspension may be imposed upon such person(s) by the Commissioner at his sole discretion.” So, if we see the players involved in the fight get fined, the maximum fine would be $50,000.
