The Detroit Pistons last won their NBA title in 2004. But before then, Joe Dumars helped the team secure back-to-back NBA championships in 1989 and 1990. Recently, the former six-time NBA All-Star shared a personal story on the Bucks Plus Audio podcast, where he opened up about the tragic loss of his father during the NBA Finals, which occurred during Game 3 of the Finals.
Dumars credited his mother’s strong words to keep him focused on the 1990 Finals against the Portland Trail Blazers. He added that the team owner, Bill Davidson, generously offered him his private jet to return home. He later went on to explain how his mother insisted he stay focused on winning the championship rather than returning home immediately.
“I said, ‘We’ll fly home tonight.’ She said, ‘for what?’ She laughed, Marcus. She said, ‘Boy, your daddy would have us if you talk about leaving your job.’ She said, ‘Okay, this is what we’re going to do. You guys are going to win both of those games. You’re going to close the series out,‘” Dumars said.
Joe Dumars’ Heartfelt Request To His Wife Before His Father’s Death
Before Joe Dumars’ father passed away during the 1990 NBA Finals, Dumars and his family, including his mother and wife, Debbie, knew the end was near. Before the Detroit Pistons prepared to face the Portland Trail Blazers, Dumars made a special request to his wife in case the worst happened during a game.
“If Dad dies during a game, I want you to promise me you’ll be the one to tell me, OK? And not until after the game is over. Just you, OK?” Dumars shared, according to the Detroit Press.
Dumars showed incredible leadership during the Finals. In Game 3, the Pistons secured a commanding 121-106 victory over the Trail Blazers, with Dumars contributing 33 points. It was the same day his father passed away, yet Dumars kept his composure and led his team to an important win.
