Aiming to surpass their disappointing 14-win record from last season, the Detroit Pistons want to assemble a stronger squad this summer. They made their most significant move earlier this week by signing former Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris to a lucrative two-year contract. Now that Harris is back with the team, the Pistons look like they are going in a fresh direction. The senior forward is likely to be very important to their progress.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Pistons view Harris as a “foundational leader” who can guide the team through their rebuild process. Fischer noted, “Outside of George and two-time champion wing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the only other major beneficiaries on the open market who changed teams were Tobias Harris — whom Detroit, sources said, believes can serve as a foundational leader for the Pistons’ rebuild from the NBA cellar.”
Harris was with the Pistons from 2015 to 2018 and helped them make one of their only two playoff appearances in the last decade during the 2015-16 season. While Harris alone cannot ensure a playoff place this season, he can surely assist in leading the squad correctly.
By surrounding him with young, eager talent, Harris will have the chance to showcase his leadership as the team focuses on long-term growth.
Tobias Harris Can Be a ‘Roller Coaster’ For Pistons
Earlier this week, the Detroit Pistons signed veteran forward Tobias Harris to a two-year, $52 million deal. While Harris isn’t considered an NBA superstar, some people question the deal’s worth. Despite the doubts, Harris views this as a chance for his personal development and the team’s growth.
Harris has been a dependable role player for most of the last decade. Throughout his 13-year career, he’s averaged 16.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game, with some seasons nearing the 20-point mark. Last year, he averaged 17.2 points per game as the Philadelphia 76ers’ third option behind Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

Recently, Mark Media said about his inclusion, “I think he’s a good player. So, he can be a good kind of presence for those young players, and he can also get buckets. Sometimes he’s a roller coaster regarding how consistent he is as a shooter and a defender, but I think he plays the right way.“
