During a recent episode of NBA Today on ESPN, Zach Lowe, an NBA analyst at ESPN, and Kendrick Perkins, a retired NBA player, discussed the Minnesota Timberwolves’ recent loss in game two against the Dallas Mavericks. They also debated Rudy Gobert’s performance in the last two games. Gobert is the KIA NBA Defensive Player of the Year for the current season.
Zach Lowe: Are we going to skirt past the fact that Rudy Gobert has the best plus/minus for the Wolves in the playoffs for a mile, and the defense was destroyed by the Mavericks’ defense when he was on the floor, and we are not going to be mentioning that.
Kendrick Perkins: Because plus/minus is the most overrated stat in the league. You can ask anybody.
Zach Lowe: Not over 15 to 20 games. This is not a one-game sample, but it is the whole playoffs.
Kendrick Perkins: Since you want to go over the whole playoffs, tell me this. Minnesota’s best game was when? Against the Denver Nuggets in game two, who was out?… Pull up the stats on how many times the Dallas Mavericks scored when Rudy [Gobert] was in the pick-and-roll.
Rudy Gobert is having a tough time defending Luka Doncic
The Mavericks beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 109-108 in the second game. Dallas now leads the Western Conference Finals 2-0 with this win. Rudy Gobert is having a tough time defending Luka Doncic, the star player of the Mavericks, and there were some heated moments between the two players during game 2. In the final moments of the fourth quarter, the Mavericks were trailing by two points when Doncic scored a three-pointer, securing a 2-0 lead and frustrating Gobert. After the 3-pointer, Doncic got confrontational and exchanged words with Gobert, the defensive player of the year.
