Derrick Rose stunned the basketball world with his retirement announcement in late September. Despite injuries playing a spoiled sport in his career, the Chicago Bulls legend is still the youngest NBA MVP winner in history. Rose recently opened up on emulating legendary Kobe Bryant’s approach to basketball in his early career, which left him “tricked” and “f*cked up.”
The first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft had a spectacular first three seasons with the Chicago Bulls. He won two All-Star selections and an MVP honor in 2011. However, he failed to replicate his MVP season stats in the next 12 years of his career.
In his recent appearance on the Club 520 Podcast, Derrick Rose admitted he imitated Kobe Bryant’s work ethic and felt tricked. “I didn’t go out to eat with my family or friends like that. No movies like that — none of that. No concerts, because I was totally locked into thinkin’ that I had to follow what Kobe was doin’, thinkin’ Kob as not enjoyin’ hisself, not goin’ on vacays, not doin’ any of that. So, I felt tricked in a way — whenever at the time I felt that way,” Rose said.
However, the former Chicago Bulls guard realized he was fooled the entire time, which was frustrating for him. “My fourth year I ended up goin’ to the Philippines with him. I saw him relax. I’m like, ‘Oh, you motherf—– was trickin’ me this whole time,” Rose added. “I dedicated three years — three years of thinkin’ you didn’t do s—.’ And to see you actually out here just chillin’, it kinda f—– me up.”
Derrick Rose Doubts Michael Jordan’s Potential If It Wasn’t For The Chicago Bulls
On the same podcast, Rose made a startling comment on NBA legend Michael Jordan.“MJ wouldn’t be MJ if he played anywhere else but Chicago for his pro career,” he claimed. The 36-year-old credited the Bulls’ culture for the six-time NBA champion’s success.
During his time in the NBA, Rose played 15 seasons for six teams. He averaged 17.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists in 723 games. Apart from Rose, three-time NBA champion Danny Green and former Utah Jazz forward Gordon Hayward are among the NBA stars who retired in 2024.
