A blockbuster trade proposal has the Phoenix Suns sending one of their core players to a top rival team.
The Suns have had a busy offseason, acquiring All-Star guard Bradley Beal earlier this month in a blockbuster trade with the Washington Wizards. Before that, they hired ex-Los Angeles Lakers’ head coach Frank Vogel for their HC position after surprisingly parting ways with Monty Williams.
Center Deandre Ayton has been one top names mentioned in recent trade rumors. If the Suns put him on the trade block, could the championship-hopeful Los Angeles Clippers inquire about his services?
At NBA Analysis Network, James Piercey proposed a massive trade that would see the Suns dealing the No. 1 selection of the 2018 NBA Draft in exchange for a trio of forwards in Robert Covington, Marcus Morris Sr. and Ivica Zubac:
“It is almost unquestionable that Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal are the most talented trio in the NBA at the moment. It’s hard to know who is going to play for the Suns next season after those three and Ayton are gone.
With such a top-heavy roster, it is likely that Covington will have plenty of playing time with the Suns. There was a time not so long ago when he was one of the best 3-and-D wings in the NBA. There is a good chance that Covington will still be able to contribute to the team.
In the meantime, Zubac can be used to replace Ayton. It is more important for the Suns to have rotation players than they are to have the best possible big man they can roster at the moment.”
The Suns eliminated the Clippers in the opening round of the postseason, only to be ousted by the Denver Nuggets in the second round. It marked the second straight year in which Phoenix fell in the conference semis, as they once again failed to build off their thrilling trip to the 2021 Western Conference Finals.
Phoenix already shook up its roster by acquiring Beal. The Clippers, who have also underwhelmed in the postseason in the Kawhi Leonard-Paul George Era, could certainly use a roster shake-up of their own as well.

And perhaps a player like Ayton could be the piece needed to help the Clippers make some more noise in the postseason.
