On Saturday, multiple reports stated that Portland Trail Blazers’ superstar Damian Lillard has requested a trade from the organization.
It was immediately reported that the Brooklyn Nets and Miami Heat are among the front runners for the seven-time All-Star, and that Lillard prefers to play for the reigning Eastern Conference champions.
According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, the San Antonio Spurs could be another team to follow in the Lillard sweepstakes. Shelburne reports that the soon-to-be 33-year-old Lillard “has a deep respect for the San Antonio Spurs organization.”
The Spurs drafted generational prospect Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick in this year’s draft. Wembanyama is widely regarded as the best prospect since LeBron James, with some scouts even suggesting he’s a more well-rounded player now than The King when he went first overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2004.
If the Spurs could find a way to add Lillard to a roster featuring Wembanyama, the rebuild in San Antonio would undoubtedly be over, and the club would be ready to compete for championships again.
But even if the Spurs decide to pursue him, there will obviously be plenty of competition for Lillard’s services. World-class playmakers and scorers of his caliber don’t come around very often, and several clubs will see him as the final piece to a championship puzzle.
