Chauncey Billups played for the Detroit Pistons for the majority of his 17-year basketball career before retiring and beginning his coaching career. He is currently serving as the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. During a recent appearance on the 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast, Billups, also known as “Mr. Big Shot,” shared an incredible story about one of his players. He alleged that when his team was down 18 points against the New Orleans Pelicans, one of his players had posted his personal highlight video to social media.
“We are in New Orleans, and we’re down about 18 at the half. I had a kid who had a nasty dunk. We were coming out for the third quarter. This motherf—er done posted his dunk on his joint. At halftime. At halftime! Bro, we are down 18. I get wind of it. I said, ‘Ay yo bro, Get the f— back there and take that shit down off your joint, man. What the f— is wrong with you, man? My bad coach, my bad coach,’ he runs to the back. We are down 18. He posts the joint at halftime. I said, ‘Man, what is going on?’” Billups said.
Billups Reflects on His Journey to Pistons Glory
Chauncey Billups played for the Minnesota Timberwolves for two seasons, from 2000 to 2002. During the same interview, he mentioned that his time with the Timberwolves taught him several important lessons that ultimately contributed to his success with the Pistons.
“To me, it really happened mostly in Minnesota right before I went to Detroit. One, I was ready. I knew what I needed to do now, I knew what I needed to focus on. So I was ready, and then I had a couple of vets. I got to learn from Terrell Brandon. This [guy] was cold. He poured into me, bro. He taught me how to read pick-n-roll, he taught me how to read defenses.” Billups added.
During his conversation with host Carmelo Anthony, Billups brought up an important aspect of Anthony’s career. He mentioned how the history of the Detroit Pistons might have been altered if Anthony had joined them after the 2003 NBA Draft.
