This week, the Charlotte Hornets have come under fire for their shady behavior with a young, ardent fan. During a halftime event, the team allegedly gave out a PlayStation 5 to a lucky child. However, they moved the item away from the camera, leaving the child with only a jersey.
When the little fan received the pricey present, he smiled with delight, but his happiness was fleeting. A social media post claims that once the cameras stopped recording, a Hornets employee took out the PS5 and gave him a jersey in its place. The Hornets apologized and disclosed their attempts to put things right in a statement following the story’s public release.
Charlotte Hornets stated, “During last night’s game, there was an on-court skit that missed the mark. The skit included bad decision making and poor communication. Simply put, we turned the ball over and we apologize. We have reached out to the family and are committed to not only making it right but exceeding expectations. We will be providing the fan with the PS5 that he should have taken home last night all along with a VIP experience to a future game. Our goal is and will remain to elevate the guest experience for every person that enters Spectrum Center, and to show our fans how much we appreciate their relentless support.”
On Monday, the Charlotte Hornets game against the Philadelphia 76ers featured a skit during the second-quarter break deemed to have “missed the mark.” The team’s Santa Claus-clad mascot, Hugo, was carried onto the court with a youngster. A cheerleader showed up with a bag containing the coveted video game console after a letter to Santa requesting a PS5 was read aloud.
Charlotte Hornets Will Have A Hard Time Redeeming Their Credibility After This Viral Incident
Overall, the Hornets’ deceit and lying to their own fan base are pretty awful looks. But you have to give them a small credit for at least attempting to make amends. Their reputation will regrettably take some time to repair. But perhaps some victories on the court will help atone for some of their wrongdoings.
When the PS5 was removed, the cheerleader and several people around her were said to be perplexed. The young fan was kept in the dark. However, the child’s uncle was supposedly told that the present was not for keeping.

The Hornets are 13th in the East this season and facing the lottery again. Nevertheless, they have a strong following of devoted supporters who attend and support them at every home game. Oddly, the franchise’s entertainment crew couldn’t part with a $450–$500 present, given that it was sold for almost $3 billion last year. At least the youngster will eventually get the present he wanted along with VIP treatment, even though the matter could have been handled better.
