During a recent interview with an ESPN Chicago radio show, Charles Barkley, an analyst and the main personality of the show, expressed his concerns about TNT losing its TV rights to NBC. He mentioned that he is “100 percent” concerned about the future of the show. As the NBA’s media rights agreement is soon to expire, TNT may no longer be the league’s broadcast partner. TNT Sports is competing with NBC for the NBA’s remaining television rights.
ESPN/ABC and Amazon Prime Video have already laid the groundwork for partnerships that are expected to last at least ten years, and TNT’s current NBA contract will end after the 2024-25 season.
Charles Barkley has expressed serious concerns about the future of TNT. During discussions about a potential deal with NBC, he openly shared his deep anxiety about the show’s future in relation to the NBA. When asked about the future of the show, Barkley, who has been the host of the show for a long time, said that the other workers of the show don’t have any idea what will happen.
“It’s 50-50 that we lose our part to NBC. Am I concerned? 100%, because as much as we have been partners with the NBA for, I think, 40 years, you would think if it was close in a bidding war, we would get the benefit of the doubt, but clearly, that’s not happening … they’re scared to death over here right now.” Charles Barkley said.
Charles Barkley feels bad for the other hosts of the show
TNT has been broadcasting NBA games since 1989 and is the home of the highly successful “Inside the NBA” program, so Barkley’s concerns raise serious questions about what could go wrong. “Inside the NBA” first aired in 1989 and has since become a staple of NBA televised coverage. The current studio team includes Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and, Ernie Johnson. Johnson has been the show’s host since 1990.
“We might lose it. I feel so bad for the people I work with. It is brutal.” Barkley added.
