According to recent reports by Boston Globe Dan Shaughnessy, Former basketball player Bob Cousy believes that the Boston Celtics exposed Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving, who is no longer considered a superstar due to his inability to perform in the playoffs.
“The Celtics have exposed Kyrie Irving as not quite a superstar. He has been severely subdued. They’re not even trapping him a lot. They’re doing it one-on-one. Kyrie’s working his ass off, and they’re still stopping most of his stuff. He’s no longer in the superstar category. You’ve got to function in the playoffs to determine where you are in the hierarchy.” Bob Cousy said on the phone call to Boston Globe.
Cousy Criticized Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic
Cousy further mentioned the Mavericks’ strength, saying that Doncic and Irving are Dallas’ assets. However, he also poked fun at Doncic, likening him to a truck driver.
“Dallas’s strengths are [Luka] Doncic and Kyrie. And they have to be at their best, but their strengths go against the Celtics’ defensive strength. Doncic looks like a truck driver, but he’s an amazing athlete and gets it done.” Cousy added.
The Mavericks lost three consecutive games in the seven-game NBA Finals series against the Celtics. In game 1, Irving only scored 12 points, along with two assists and three rebounds, while in game 2, he scored 16 points, six assists, and two rebounds. Both games disappointed Irving, as the Celtics’ defense dominated against Dallas. However, in game 3, Irving contributed an amazing performance, scoring 35 points, two assists, and three rebounds in his 45 minutes of play. Despite Irving’s efforts, Dallas lost the third straight game, and the Celtics took a 3-0 lead.
After game 3, the star player of the Dallas Mavericks, Luka Doncic, faced criticism due to fouls. However, during a post-game interview, Kyrie Irving defended him and criticized Colin Cowherd for his comments about Doncic, saying that it’s easy to point fingers at someone.
