As the 2023–24 NBA season nears its conclusion, the top seed in the Western Conference remains vacant. The Timberwolves, Nuggets, and Thunder are vying for the top spot and home-court advantage throughout the West playoffs. On Sunday, the last week of the regular season, the three are level in first position.
Throughout the whole NBA season, the Minnesota Timberwolves have been among the top teams. The league’s best defense has been led by Defensive Player of the Year candidate Rudy Gobert, while Anthony Edwards has become a recognized superstar.
Karl-Anthony Towns, the All-Star center, hasn’t played since the beginning of March, but Shams Charania of The Athletic reports that he should be back before the postseason. Without KAT, Minnesota could have to fight for the top seed in the West, but it seems like it will be prepared to play at its best when the playoffs begin.
Minnesota is in a three-way tie for first place in the Western Conference after the Timberwolves defeated the Hawks 109-106 on Friday, and the Nuggets fell short against the Spurs.
Minnesota Timberwolves Is in the Race for the Top Spot After Their Win
Still, Minnesota isn’t in the lead. When three division opponents are tied, total head-to-head records are used as the tiebreaker. The Timberwolves finished 4-4, the Nuggets 3-5, while the Thunder went 5-3 against Denver and Minnesota.
After Sunday’s schedule, if all three teams were still tied, the Thunder would have the top seed, the Timberwolves would be the second, and the Nuggets would be the third. The Timberwolves will secure the first seed if the Thunder are defeated and the Timberwolves and Nuggets triumph.

Since the season series between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Nuggets was split, the divisional win-loss record will be used as the tiebreaker. The Timberwolves, who are 12-4 in their division compared to 10-6 for the Nuggets, are in a superior position in that scenario.
Minnesota also has the two-way tiebreaker over Oklahoma City. This would happen if the Nuggets lost and the Timberwolves and Thunder both stood victorious.
