Dennis Schroeder and the Brooklyn Nets had a less-than-inspiring season behind them with their 11th-place finish in the Eastern Conference. While things looked slightly better for Schroder as his former side finished 12th, he’s now looking to try his hands at different things in the off-season. Maybe saying feet rather than hands would be better, as the 30-year-old guard made his pro debut in soccer.
Growing up in Braunschweig, Germany, soccer was a part of Schroder’s life. Apart from skateboarding, soccer was Schroder’s passion till he turned 11. Switching soccer to basketball was easy for Schroder, who had the physical traits due to his soccer habits. Fast-forward to 2024, he has finally made his professional debut as a soccer player back where it all started, in Braunschweig. He debuted with FC Germania Bleckenstedt, a sixth-tier club in German soccer.
His debut against SC Göttingen 05 didn’t end the way Schroder would’ve hoped, as his side was battered 5-1. Schroder played 63 minutes in the game and operated on the left wing. His side currently sits sixth in the Landesliga Braunschweig table, and hopefully, he’ll get another run of games with the team.
In a social media post, he thanked his brother-in-law for allowing him to play the game. With his recent outing on the soccer field, Schroder joins NBA royalty Michael Jordan as the player who’s played two separate sports as a pro. Schroder would like to take the experience back to the USA when the next season starts, as this season was far from impressive for the 6’1″ guard.
Dennis Schroder’s Season Review
Dennis Schroder was traded to the Nets in the February window from the Raptors alongside Thaddeus Young in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie. Schroder debuted just two days after the trade against the Spurs in a 123-103 win.
His performance had a slight improvement from what it was with the Raptors. Schroder scored 14.6 points per game in 29 outings for the Nets compared to 13.7 ppg in 51 games for the Toronto side. His rebounding also improved from 2.7 to 3.5, with a shooting of 42.4% from the field.

Schroder’s contract with the Nets expires at the end of next season, and he will earn $13 million this year. With the Paris Olympics approaching, Germany will look to repeat their 2023 FIBA World Cup success, and for them to succeed, Schroder has to replicate his MVP form from last year in national colors.
