Following a dominating March Madness run in 2024, Dan Hurley guided the UConn Huskies to back-to-back NCAA Tournament victories. Hurley is currently in high demand as a head coach for college basketball, and the Los Angeles Lakers could be the frontrunner.
A new development has emerged regarding the former national champion’s future at UConn, even as he prepares for a third consecutive title. According to a recent report from NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Los Angeles Lakers are allegedly considering hiring Hurley as their next head coach.
Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted on X: “The Los Angeles Lakers are targeting Connecticut’s Dan Hurley to become the franchise’s next coach and are preparing a massive, long-term contract offer to bring the back-to-back national champion to the NBA,”
Owner Jeanie Buss and general manager Rob Pelinka had already made first contact with Hurley. However, it is anticipated that the two parties will shortly intensify their talks.
The claim is surprising given that J.J. Redick, a former standout player for the Duke Blue Devils, was thought to be the front-runner to become the Lakers’ head coach. According to Wojnarowski, Hurley will also join the Lakers this summer on a big, long-term contract.

Under Hurley’s direction, the Huskies have received four straight berths in the NCAA Tournament. According to the UConn website, in addition to his two national titles, Hurley has delivered one conference and one regular-season championship to Connecticut.
In 2024–25, Hurley can go down in college basketball history as one of the best head coaches ever. After all, it is anticipated that Hurley will lead the Huskies to a three-peat. With his experience, he might push back the Los Angeles Lakers.
Hurley would need a deal worth at least $15 million annually to entice him away from UConn. Kansas’ Bill Self makes over $10 million yearly and hasn’t won a title. Meanwhile, the UConn head coach hopes to make it three in a row. The precise terms of the contract have yet to be made public.
