Monday night was certainly special for all the members of the Boston Celtics, but winning the championship ring was a dream come true for Al Horford. A dream that he had seen in an unforgettable meeting with the franchise’s former GM Danny Ainge.
While talking to the reporters in the post-game press conference, Horford narrated the story of what the then-Celtics president Danny Ainge told him in the 2016 meeting during his free agency that convinced him to join the Cs.
The former Hawks center’s mind was already diverted by Wyc Grousbeck’s shiny 2008 championship ring, but the president’s statement assured him of his move. “He said, ‘You can win championships in many places, but there’s nothing like winning in Boston. Nothing like winning as a Celtic. And that stuck with me from that meeting,” added Horford. The Dominican got on board with the Shamrocks comfortably for the next three seasons.
Horford then moved to Philadelphia and Oklahoma City before returning to Boston and finally getting his dream ring, which made him feel the truth behind Ainge’s words.
Appearing for 19 games in the playoffs, he contributed 9.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting at 47.8% from the floor. After his glorious win, even the often harsh social media fans couldn’t hold back their appreciation.
