Despite the Boston Celtics succeeding in the NBA Finals series against the Dallas Mavericks, the spotlight is falling on Jayson Tatum’s lack on the offensive field. Even though the Boston star has clarified his new role in the team, Colin Cowherd of Fox Sports feels that he cannot be considered in the elite list of players.
On his podcast, the sports media personality was joined by Jason Timpf and the two discussed the NBA Finals’ second game and Tatum’s standing in the league. Cowherd stated that he believes Tatum’s name would be considered in the Top-10 NBA player’s list but he doesn’t have the “finishing element.”
The host praised him for his contribution to the defensive end and for dishing out assists, but highly criticized his scoring abilities. Bringing up the references to NBA greats, Cowherd said, “Our lifetime: Kareem, Bird, LeBron, Steph, Duncan, Michael, we need a basket,” said Cowherd. He’s not consistently that guy.”
Cowherd also mentioned Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett’s impact on the team that helped the Cs in acquiring the 2008 championship trophy. However, he feels Tatum, who is averaging 17 points, 10 rebounds and 8.5 assists in the Finals series, cannot be depended on. Not only that, Cowherd also dismissed him from the Celtics second team.
Colin Cowherd Snubs Jayson Tatum From All-Time Celtics Second Team
While many believe adding a Larry O’Brien Trophy to an NBA player’s name makes him stand out, Colin Cowherd dismissed that notion about Jayson Tatum and further went on to say that, based on his current form, he might not make it to Boston’s All-Time second team.
As per the 60-year-old, even if the Boston forward lays his hands on the prestigious title, Tatum will have to go a long way to match up with the standards the former players of the franchise have created.

“Everybody knows Jayson Tatum is really good. So, Jayson Tatum’s never won an MVP and has no titles. 5 All-Star games would rank him for 13th most in Celtics history. The standards are different. Right now, he maybe the 5th best forward in Celtics history. For a lot of franchises, he’s their 1st or 2nd or 3rd best player ever. I’m not sure he makes the All-Time Celtics second team,” said the veteran analyst.
For now, Tatum would want to keep his personal goals aside to bag the championship trophy with his team. The Celtics have already taken a 2-0 lead and with two more wins in the series would bring the franchise their 18th trophy.
