The Boston Celtics will look to defend their NBA championship in the upcoming season, with their oldest player, Al Horford, recently addressing his retirement rumors. After joining the league in the 2007 NBA Draft, the 38-year-old big man had to wait 17 years to win his first championship ring.
After winning the 2024 NBA Finals, the Celtics surpassed the Los Angeles Lakers to win 18 NBA championships. While Boston has a chance to win back-to-back titles for the first time since 2018, many NBA experts believe the franchise will face a tough challenge in the upcoming season.
Earlier in the month, the five-time All-Star’s retirement rumors spread like wildfire on social media, leading his sister Anna Horford to wind it down. She took to X and responded to a tweet claiming her brother announced retirement from the NBA after winning the championship.
During the Celtics’ media day ahead of the 2024-25 season, Horford said, “For me, and I’ve said this before, I never put a limit on how long I’m gonna play. I feel good, and I’m very fortunate to be in this position, and I give God the glory for that. I’m just gonna keep playing, and that’s what that is.”
Where Does Al Horford Rank In NBA’s Oldest Players List?
The third overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2007 NBA Draft, Al Horford turned 38 in June, ahead of the 2024 NBA Finals between the Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks. He is the oldest Celtics star, followed by guard Jrue Holiday, who turned 34 the same month.
