Boston Celtics’ superstar Jaylen Brown has been eligible for a supermax extension for several weeks now. But as August approaches, the pen still has yet to be put to the paper.
Earlier this month, it was reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that Brown could soon the richest contract in NBA history for $304 million. This would include $70 million for the final year of the deal, Wojnarowski noted.
According to Brian Robb of MassLive.com, there are two “issues” that have held up Brown’s looming contract extension: Potential trade kickers as well as a player option for a fifth year on the contract:
“Despite (president of basketball operations Brad) Stevens’ optimism, the absence of a supermax deal nearly three weeks into free agency is a little bit noteworthy given the factors in play for both sides. There are issues to work out per sources (trade kicker possibilities, player option for a fifth year, etc.) that come as no surprise at this point. However, it will be interesting to see just what side gives in on their preferred terms for a deal.”
In Oct. 2019, Brown was awarded a lucrative four-year contract extension worth $115 million. He has repaid Boston by leading them to three Eastern Conference Finals appearances over the last four years, as well as a trip to the 2022 NBA Finals.

Many called for the Celtics to shake up their core after they fell to the Miami Heat in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Stevens sent out Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks and acquired Kristaps Porziņģis from the Washington Wizards in a three-team trade that saw Boston deal fan favorite Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies.
The 26-year-old Brown is coming off the best statistical season of his career in which he averaged 26.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 6.9 assists per contest.
