Bill Simmons often shares his insights on NBA trades, and the recent Damian Lillard situation was no exception. When Lillard requested a trade from the Portland Trail Blazers, many anticipated that the Miami Heat would be his likely destination, given their championship ambitions. However, unexpected developments left fans and analysts puzzled.
On “The Bill Simmons Podcast,” Simmons voiced his disappointment with the Heat’s handling of the situation, particularly its aggressive media tactics. He suggested these strategies may have hindered negotiations with the Trail Blazers, resulting in Miami’s failure to secure Lillard. Ultimately, Lillard was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, while the Heat also lost out on Jrue Holiday, who went to the Boston Celtics.
Simmons argued that Portland’s hesitation to trade with Miami was due to the Heat’s media approach, which ultimately backfired. He highlighted the contrast between Miami’s offer, which included Tyler Herro and several draft picks, and what Portland accepted.
“Herro, Jovic, Duncan Robinson, two Miami firsts, and one Miami swap. And instead, they did Ayton, Jrue Holiday, a Milwaukee 2029 first, and two Milwaukee swaps. So I’m gonna make the case they actually still did the right thing,” Simmons noted, acknowledging Portland’s trade decisions.
He criticized Miami’s media presence, stating, “Miami, and their whole little annoying media machine that they have, f**ked up that Portland situation to that point that Joe Cronin & the Portland people were like “we’re never trading with those f**king guys.’” This created an environment where Portland did not consider Miami for trades, including for Jrue Holiday.
Bill Simmons On The Heat’s Pursuit Of Lillard And The Impact Of Media Narratives
Simmons suggested that the Heat’s public comments about deserving Lillard might have created tension between them and the Blazers. He pointed out that these factors led to Portland choosing to trade Holiday to the Celtics instead of Miami, which strengthened a major rival in the Eastern Conference.

Simmons argued that this situation showed larger NBA issues, where media narratives can influence trade negotiations. He noted that the Heat had just reached the Finals and that Lillard wanted to join them, raising expectations. Yet, in a surprise move, Lillard ended up with Giannis Antetokounmpo on the Bucks instead of teaming up with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. An NBA memo about Lillard’s trade request, which warned against a one-team demand, complicated the situation. This memo likely made it harder for Miami to finalize a deal.
Ultimately, Simmons stressed that the Heat’s mistakes had serious consequences. They not only failed to land Lillard but also missed out on acquiring Holiday, leaving them in a difficult position. “All the s**t Miami did that summer led to them not getting Jrue Holiday who also would have blocked Boston from getting Jrue Holiday,” he remarked. The Miami Heat now have to deal with the fallout from their pursuit of Lillard, which shows how aggressive media strategies can impact important negotiations in the NBA.
