A bizarre incidnt has knocked an Aussie basketball star out of the Tokyo Olympics.
Australia’s Aron Baynes, who also plays for the Raptors, will miss the rest of the Olympic men’s basketball tournament after sustaining a neck injury in what team doctor David Hughes called “a complicated series of events.”
“He did suffer an injury during the match on the court, and then he had a slip in the bathroom and suffered further injury,” Hughes told reporters. “It became apparent to the medical staff that this was a bit more serious than just an average injury.”
Baynes was a key player on the team as he started both games for the Australian team and had 17 points and seven rebounds in just 14 minutes against Italy before he was injured.
The bathroom slip was unfortunate for several reasons, because it may just mark the end of his Olympics career as well. Baynes will be 37-years-old for the 2024 Games in Paris. It puts a huge dent on the team’s hopes for their first Olympic medal. They are currently ranked third in the world by FIBA and lost in the bronze medal match of the last two major tournaments they’ve played (the 2016 Olympics and 2019 World Cup).
They will finish up group play by taking on Germany.
