This year’s Team USA roster brought a dream to life for Anthony Edwards, who had the chance to play alongside his childhood idol, Kevin Durant, at the Paris Olympics. Besides Durant, the debutant USA star came out as a major force to lead the team to win their straight fifth gold in the Paris Olympics.
Despite their successful partnership on the international stage, their NBA journeys told a different story. During the 2024 NBA playoffs, the Minnesota Timberwolves, led by Edwards, achieved a surprising 4-0 sweep over Durant’s Phoenix Suns in the first round. At the “Fanatics Fest” in New York City, Edwards expressed mixed feelings about defeating his hero.
“I’m not going to lie, I felt bad a little bit. Only because he’s my favorite player of all time, I didn’t want to send him home like that,” Edwards said.
Both players had eye-catching seasons leading up to the playoffs. Edwards averaged 25.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists, while Durant posted 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. In the four-game playoff series against Phoenix, Edwards averaged a series-high 31.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 6.3 assists.

Minnesota will play 18 games on national TV, including ESPN, ABC, and TNT. Their season opener is scheduled for October 22 against the Los Angeles Lakers in Los Angeles. This marks the first time the Timberwolves have been part of the opening night festivities since the league began the tradition in 2002.
