The Los Angeles Lakers could be a potential landing spot for Minnesota Timberwolves’ young phenom and star Anthony Edwards, according to an NBA executive.
Philadelphia 76ers’ guard Patrick Beverley made headlines earlier this week when he stated that the No. 1 selection of 2020 will eventually leave the Timberwolves. Beverley agreed that a big market like New York or Los Angeles would be a good place for Edwards to showcase his talents.
Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports spoke to an executive to get their thoughts on Edwards potentially joining the Lakers. While the exec said that a star wanting to join a big market club “is outdated thinking”, they said it’s possible he’ll wish to go to LA if the Timberwolves don’t play their cards right.
“Anthony Edwards might leave the Timberwolves and he might want to go to the Lakers. But it is not going to be because of market size. It’s going to be because the Timberwolves made some bad decisions. Maybe that changes, but that’s how it stands.”
The Lakers are always linked to big-named players, be it in free agency or on the trade market. Over a one-year span, they managed to win the 2018 LeBron James free agency sweepstakes before acquiring Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans in a 2019 blockbuster trade.

So of course if Edwards eventually decides he wants to leave Minnesota, the Lakers will be widely regarded as a front-runner for his services. Of course, Edwards hasn’t at all hinted that he’s looking to leave the team that helped him develop into a star.
If the Timberwolves can build a consistent winner around Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert, perhaps it’ll be enough to convince the Georgia product to stay in Minny long-term.
