The Los Angeles Lakers are heading into the new NBA season with renewed determination after a disappointing end to their previous campaign. Last season, Anthony Davis’ team’s hopes of winning another NBA title were dashed, and to make matters worse, the Boston Celtics surpassed them by claiming their 18th championship while setting a new record.
However, Lakers stars Anthony Davis and LeBron James are not dwelling on the past. The duo is fresh off their gold medal win with Team USA at the Paris Olympics. Now, they’re eager to carry that winning momentum into the upcoming season with the Lakers. Joe Vardon of The Athletic reports that Davis is vying to lead the Lakers back to championship glory, especially with James by his side.
“The goal at the end of the day is still to win championships. You can’t skip steps. The first step is we’re going to hold guys accountable,” Davis said and continued, “We’re going to show up to work, and if something goes wrong, we’re going to hold guys accountable, and then from there, we’ll figure it out.”
ESPN Highlights Anthony Davis as a Top Defensive Player of the Year Hopeful
Anthony Davis’s exceptional defensive skills have consistently drawn praise from analysts and former NBA players alike. Now, ESPN has added another chapter to this recognition. The outlet named the Lakers superstar a top contender for the Defensive Player of the Year award for the upcoming season.
ESPN ranks Davis as the fourth-most likely player to win the DPOY title next season. This comes after a strong showing last year, where he finished fourth in the voting, receiving four first-place votes, ten second-place votes, and thirty-three third-place votes. He is coming off a season averaging 24.7 points, 3.5 assists, 2.3 blocks, and a career-high 12.6 rebounds per game.
