During a ceremonial press conference in which the Lakers’ bestowed the no. 3 jersey to Anthony Davis, the perennial All-Star spoke on various topics that included his future contract plans.
The Lakers are hoping Davis will be a focal point of their franchise for the next 10 years or so, even though he is technically signed through next season only. The 26-year-old forward was asked about his plan to sign long-term with the franchise and he gave a brutally honest answer.
“When that time comes around next year, you can ask me that question, we can revisit it. Right now I’m focused on this year and how I can help this team and help the organization become a championship team,” he said.
That is a smart answer from Davis who definitely doesn’t want old video of him to surface stating how he will re-sign with the team like it did with Kyrie Irving and the Boston Celtics and he eventually took his talents to the Brooklyn Nets this offseason.
Davis was traded by the Pelicans to the Lakers for a massive haul that included several first-round picks, Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart.
