The Dallas Mavericks made headlines with one of the most controversial trades in NBA history when they sent Luka Doncic in exchange for Anthony Davis. While Davis has been an elite player when healthy, his long history of injuries made many question the Mavericks’ decision to part ways with Doncic, who has had a relatively more durable career.
Those concerns were validated almost immediately. In his debut game for Dallas, Davis exited late in the third quarter due to an adductor strain. Reports indicated that the injury might be linked to a previous abdominal issue, which had already kept him out of the Mavericks’ season opener.
The timing of the injury has only intensified criticism of the trade. Fans struggle to understand why the franchise gave up on Doncic so soon. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Davis is expected to miss multiple weeks, with the possibility of his absence extending to a full month.

The setback is also significant, as it also means Davis will miss the 2025 NBA All-Star Game. On Monday, his teammate Kyrie Irving was named as his replacement on the All-Star roster.
Despite the injury, Davis’ debut with the Mavericks showed flashes of why the team took the gamble on him. Before exiting the game, he recorded 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting, 13 rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and zero turnovers.

“They are still evaluating. There is still stuff that has to come out; at some point, that will. All speculation right now,” Kidd said.
The Mavericks now hold an eighth-place spot in the Western Conference with a 28-25 record. The Mavericks are eager to get their star big man back on the floor, but until there is more clarity, the team will have to adjust and move forward without him.
