The Portland Trail Blazers are undergoing a major rebuild this offseason, raising questions about the future of their star player, Jerami Grant. The 30-year-old forward has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason, but no deals have materialized so far.
Reports suggest that the team’s general manager, Joe Cronin, asked the LA Lakers for two first-round picks in exchange for Grant. Meanwhile, an anonymous NBA scout called out Cronin for his hefty asking price.
“Joe Cronin asking for two first-rounders for Jerami Grant is hilarious. Portland traded one first for him and then gave him that terrible contract. Why would he be more valuable now than he was when they landed him two years ago?” the scout said.
Grant’s massive contract poses a challenge for the Blazers as they attempt to rebuild with a 30-year-old player on their roster. The situation leaves the Blazers in a difficult position, balancing the need to build for the future while managing existing player contracts.
Jake Fischer Discusses Lakers’ Interest in Jerami Grant
Apart from drafting Dalton Knecht and Bronny James, the Los Angeles Lakers have made minimal changes to their roster this offseason. However, they have been linked to Jerami Grant on several occasions. Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer shared insights into this possibility.
“The Lakers have, I think, limited options of players who are actually available, who are difference-makers that they could foreseeably go and acquire. To my knowledge, (Jerami Grant) is someone that’s been on the radar,” Fischer said.
Grant averaged 21 points per game while shooting 45.1 percent from the field last season. Though he has been a consistent scorer, Blazers ended last season with a 21-61 record. This shortfall likely influenced Portland’s decision to consider moving on from him as they look to rebuild.
