Given the success that Amazon has had with Thursday Night Football, the streaming giant now wants to do the same thing with another sport.
Amazon is reportedly considering a bid for Tuesday or Thursday night NBA games once Disney and WBD’s exclusive negotiating periods end, according to Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports.
Thursday Night Football is averaging 13.6 million viewers per week after Amazon agreed to pay $1 billion annually for the weekly game through 2033. The company is aiming for an NBA game package on Tuesday or Thursday nights.
“According to sources, after agreeing to pay $1 billion yearly for TNF through 2033, the eCommerce giant is eying an NBA game package on Tuesday or Thursday nights. The goal: create the NBA’s version of ‘TNF,’ said sources. According to sources, the NBA also likes that Amazon draws an audience seven years younger than the NFL’s legacy TV partners.”
According to reports, the NBA is looking for $50–75 billion for its upcoming cycle of long-term media rights deals, which will begin in the 2025–26 season, and is particularly interested in Amazon’s potential to draw a demographic that is seven years younger than the NFL’s historical partners.
However, the NBA and its longtime broadcast partners, TNT and ESPN, are still in negotiations.
Their exclusive negotiating windows expire in 2025 and then they will be free to seek the best deal from other competitors.
