Former NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire was arrested Saturday on domestic violence charges after he allegedly punched one of his teenage daughters in the jaw during an argument
The police report says the dispute began when the victim’s grandmother called for her and Stoudemire did not like the way in which she spoke to her grandmother. An argument ensued over whether she had an “attitude” before Stoudemire allegedly punched her on the right side of her face when she began “talking back again.”
He then allegedly slapped her in the face and then again on the left side of her body. Stoudemire’s ex-wife would show investigators photos of her daughter crying with blood running down her face. Stoudemire told police that her daughter was upset because “she received a whooping from him for being disrespectful and liar.”
Hours later, Stoudemire would take to Instagram and speak out about the incident.
“Over the past 24 hours, an incident at my family home led to my being charged with assaulting my daughter. It is an allegation based on a report that does not square with the facts… As the investigation unfolds, the facts will show the allegations to be groundless as my daughter’s medical condition is not the result of being assaulted by a father who is nearly 7 feet tall and weighs 250 pounds. I could never see myself assaulting any person, especially my children. As a father, I ask for your grace as we secure our space and privacy,” Stoudemire wrote.
Stoudemire, the 2003 NBA Rookie of the Year, faces a misdemeanor battery charge. He has been released on $1,500 bond with a no-contact order issued.
